Roof Cleaning in Southport: Soft Wash & Biocide

We get the moss off your roof without blasting the tiles. Moss off first, then a soft wash, then a biocide so it doesn't come straight back.

Why roofs go green

Being this close to the coast, roofs stay damp for a long time. North-facing roofs and ones near trees hardly dry out at all, and that's exactly what moss and algae want. It starts as a green tinge and a few black streaks, and before long there are thick clumps along the tiles.

Moss soaks up rain and holds it against the tiles, and when that freezes it can crack them. Bits break off, wash into the gutters, and the gutters block and overflow down the walls.

How we clean a roof

Roof tiles need a gentle clean, so we match the method to the roof. The heavy moss comes off first, then we follow it with a biocide that kills the rest right down to the spores. We're qualified to apply biocide, and trained by Pure Seal UK.

The biocide keeps working after we've gone. Over the coming months whatever's left dies back and the rain washes it off, and the roof stays clean far longer than it would with a wash on its own.

Roof cleaning questions

Is it a good idea to pressure wash roof tiles?

Not with a strong jet up close. It can damage some tiles and force water where it shouldn't be. We soft wash roofs instead, which is low pressure with a cleaning solution, and follow it with a biocide. That kills the moss and algae without blasting the roof.

Is getting your roof cleaned worth it?

Usually, yes. Moss holds rain against the tiles, and in a cold snap that water freezes and can crack them. It also washes down into the gutters and blocks them. Keeping the roof clean helps it last, and the whole house looks better for it.

How often should a house roof be cleaned?

Most roofs need doing every few years. It depends how much shade the roof gets and how fast the moss comes back. A biocide after the clean slows it right down.

What time of year is best to clean a roof?

You can clean a roof most of the year, but a dry spell is best, because the biocide works better when it has time to soak in before it rains. We'll tell you what we think when we quote.

How much does roof cleaning cost?

It depends on the size and shape of the roof, the type of tile, how much moss there is and how easy it is to get to. We come out and have a look first, so the price is accurate, and the site visit is free. Give us a call on 07704 237470, send an email or use the form to book one in.
